I hate the way words like "edgy" and phrases like "Sesame Street meets South Park" get thrown around when people talk about Ave Q. People go expecting these things and then moan because, no, it's no where near as edgy as something like South Park. But God, it's so so much more than that. You care, simple as that. I didn't identify with Avenue Q becaause I jerk off to porn on the internet, I identified with Ave Q because I like Rod was lonely and confused and Gay. And I hear dozens of stories like that. Like an earlier poster said, everyone knows someone or is someone in Ave Q. And how many musicals can say that? The point is, is that Ave Q isn't JUST funny (although it bloody well is!) it's actually very moving.
