BIG EDIT : Despite rumor, Mary and Delroy have given their final performances, and will not be performing in Avenue Q again. However, new cast members will not be joining until the end of the month, therefore understudies are being repeatedly used until then, and they are technically still listed as cast members.
CML confirm for me that the above is correct.
Please don't book for any future dates hoping to catch their last show! It has already passed, sorry! Anyway, on with the post...
Oh, and what a sad day May 31st was. Unfortunately Mary didn't come out after the evening show, but we all got to see her between shows. Delroy turned up for both though, thank goodness.
So, I'll start by running through the brilliance that was the matinee. For those of you who missed it, here's the fun little extras which are inevitable on a cast leaving day matinee show:
1. For some reason, Kate is wearing a delightful australian explorer's hat atop the Empire State Building when she's ranting about Princeton, with hanging corks and all. The best part there was listening to Rebecca struggling oh so much to suppress huge amounts of laughter at the image that was "Auzzie Kate".
2. Another costume trick. During "For Now", uncloseted Rod bounds out wearing a silver sequin veil covering his entire body! SOMEHOW, Mary is perfectly able to hold the whole thing together, whilst the rest of the cast look amusingly shocked and Daniel giggles out Rod's final lines.
3. Cheeky antics from the cast who AREN'T leaving too. Rebecca decides to hastily rename Mrs Thistletwat from Lavinia to Mary. I happened to notice a slightly longer pause before Mrs T's "When you call me by my first name..." line! The best part was, being up in the Royal Box means you can spot Naana in the swing position on Mrs T laughing her head off and pretty much shoving an entire fist in her mouth to prevent herself from causing Mrs T to have a second voice.
4. Additionally, Chris thought he'd give Gary middle names too. The final scene ran as follows :
"Well, everybody's dreams are coming true, and then there's Gary Coleman"
"Oh come on Gary Delroy Willis Coleman! You still got all of us!"
A cracking final matinee. And as usual, the evening show was straight to script, with Mary, Delroy, Chris and a few members of the band (I believe that's who they were anyway) being given their own personal bow after all the others.
Stage dooring was fun as always. Everyone totally blanked out the major cast, seeing as it was mostly the fan clan at SD bobbing up and down waiting to see the cast. Sion Lloyd also made a guest appearance, and he and the rest of the cast decided to christen the baby which I'd somehow spent the day with (Yeah, if somehow you end up reading this in an archive some time in the future, Hi Saffron!) as "The Avenue Q Baby". Hell yeah, the official baby.
All in all an awesome day well spent, but a very sad one. I think we can all safely say there will never be another Delroy Atkinson or Mary Doherty at the Noel Coward Theatre.
Farewell to an era.
