Hey ho, first post.
First of all, I absolutely adored the show... I'd been looking forward to seeing it since a brief clip on Children in Need and my parents decided to take me to it for my birthday (we also saw Spamalot, not great but that's a story for another day). Basically, it more than surpassed my wildest expectations:
1. Made me laugh more than any other show I've ever seen in my life ever
2. Had levels of energy completely unexpected in a matinee
3. Simon Lipkin and Jon Robyns have the best chemistry I've ever seen on stage
4. It's the only show that me, my mum and my dad all loved equally
5. 'There's A Fine, Fine Line' is completely unexpected levels of sad, it affected me more than 'Empty Chairs at Empty Tables' from Les Mis. Mainly because, you know, you don't expect it from such a funny show
Anyway, the audience were incredibly receptive: The 'normal people don't sit at home and look at porn on the internet' got an absolutely huge laugh, so long that Simon and Julie stared at each other barely stifling the giggles, which I think propelled the audience even more. Plus, I know that the 'is her name 'purpose'?' line is a hot button on here, so I'll let you know that that line got applause as well, as did the 'George Bush' line in 'For Now'.
Cast? Well, Luke Evans was playing Brian and Gloria... Erm, whats-her-face was playing Mrs T/Bear. I hate to say it but both were extremely okay. Luke, rather than doing what most understudies do and putting everything into his role, appeared to be incredibly bored and apathetic, and I was having a pretty tough time deciding whether that was him or his character. Gloria was scary and her mad hair kind of put me off. She was a good actress, though!
Stage door: I wasn't expecting much from a matinee, which was confirmed when:
(a) Luke Evans ploughed by, looking upwards all the way
(b) Simon Lipkin walked past, flanked by a friend
(c) Jon Robyns headed for a pub but gave me a 'how you doing' nod. Which was nice.
(d) Gloria whatsit was wearing her hair down so I didn't recognise her until she left (at this point my parents, who were patiently waiting in the rain with me, chastised me for being such a wuss)
Then Naoko Mori came out, briefly chatting to some friends. I did feel impolite hovering around waiting for her to finish, but she turned out to be incredibly sweet, asking if I enjoyed the show, etc. I said that I loved it and asked if she enjoyed being in it, to which she said that she hoped it would never end... Which is why it surprised me when I read on here that she's leaving next week :/
She personalised my autograph and told me to keep smiling, which I thought was incredibly sweet.
I really, really want to see it again, and I've found someone else who wants to go with me, so quids in!
(sorry for not mentioning improv, etc but this was the only time I'd seen the show so I don't think I can comment)
