After over a year of waiting(I didn't get hooked on this show until last March), I finally got to see it last Thursday in Raliegh.
As much I like the OBC and the OLC through the recordings and videos, I have to say that Carla Renata and Minglie Chen are now my favorite Gary and Girl Bear. Carla spoke in a more Gary Coleman-ish tone and her delivery was really good. Only problem is that the sound system in the theater they were in made some of her singing inaudible over the band, which is a shame because she's a great singer.
Minglie's Girl BIB is the best because out of the three BIBs I've heard(Jen Barnhart, Mary, and Minglie), hers sounds the youngest and cutest. She was just adorable.(It almost made you want to go "Awwww..." when she says "I wish I was dead"). While Jen's my favorite Mrs.T, I loved Minglie's delivery of the "Crabby old bitches" line(She did it in a slow, funny sounding angry tone).
CullenTitmas was on for David Benoit. Now, David's a decent singer, but his Nicky voice is a bit nasal. I was hoping Cullen wouldn't have the nasal-sounding voice, but apperantly he was following David too closely and his Nicky sounds dead-on to his. Aside from that, he did all right.
Kelli Sawyer was excellent as Kate and Lucy. During "Fine Fine Line" she made Kate sound really bitter towards Princeton at the second verse. She's also my second favorite Lucy behind Juile.
Angela Ai was an excellent Christmas Eve, and Cole Porter was a decent Brian.
While I prefer the two John and Jon's Princetons over Robert McClure's, his Rod was simply spot-on. When Rod came out and admitted he was gay, he got a huge round of applause from the audience, to which Robert yelled "SUR-PRISE!!!"
I didn't have any problems with this cast, other than the nasal-sounding Nicky and the sound issues. One funny moment is that while they passed the hats, someone stuck a ticket stub for the Tarheels in(The team for the collage in the next town over). When Robert said "Well, besides this ticket stub to the Tarheels..." the theater broke out in laughter, and there were also a couple of boos from a couple of the N.C. State fans in the audience(That happens when the rival school is ten minutes away from the theater). Of course, I don't know if they were booing the cast for mentioning the Tarheels, or if they were booing because there were Heels fans in the audience.
My dad and brother was with me, and I didn't know how he'd react to the show. To my suprise, he laughed at everything. At the end of Internet is for Porn he was laughing so hard he had to take of his glasses to wipe his eyes!(I thought he would have found it too dirty)
They also had a great audience. Of course, that's to be expected with a a college being ten minutes away. I also noticed a lot of well dressed older people, probably Season Ticket holders.
I picked up the Show Business DVD, which is a behind the scenes documentary on the creation of Avenue Q, Wicked, and the other shows of the 2003-04 Broadway season, which ends with Avenue Q's victory at the Tonys. I loved it so much, hopefully I'll get to see it again when it comes to Charlotte in July. If not, at least I finally got to see it in person!
