Just wondering what everybody thinks of these two shows making a comeback to the WE and with the lead actors/actresses having been cast from reality tv?
I watched "Any Dream Will Do" last night and was amazed at some of the panel's decisions of who got a place in the call backs and who didn't. Anyway, I'm rooting for Lee Meade who's currently in Phantom Of The Opera...he was ace.

Ah, I'm so-so on these type of shows. If it gets more people into theatre and liking musicals, than YAY! I'm all for it, goodness knows (The wicked die aloooooone. Ahem, sorry.) theatre needs all the people it can get! But I don't like how it's going to get so people think that all you need to do to be cast in a show is stroll up and be able to sing. And what's happened with Connie is that she's been pressured by the producers and the audience to perform every night, so she's been really sick recently. But ( I know I'm going to offend someone here, but whatever.) as long as it only goes for crap musicals like Grease and Joseph, than I'm fine with it. Not that I think Grease and Joseph are crap, but...they're big ol' balls of cheeseiness, and cheese works for some people, but I just simply hate cheese. Thats why I don't like Wicked THAT much. Theres a few good songs, but the book has so many plotholes, and...people are going to kill me for saying this...Idina CAN'T SING THAT WELL!!

And what's happened with Connie is that she's been pressured by the producers and the audience to perform every night, I've never heard that version of events... AIUI *she* was the one who insisted on doing every performance (well, trying to).

Lewd Rubber had something to do with Connie, he isn't blameless *cue POTO music*
I agree with emi to a certain extent. "Maria..." got many more people into theatre which is fantastic, but I can't help but think it gives so many people a jaded view of theatre and the audition process etc. And not only that, but in most cases, it's taking jobs away from the professionals who have worked their arses off for years to make something of themselves.
Oh and I am not impressed that Joseph and Grease are coming back to the WE...I ask one question only....WHY!?!

I feel very left out right now as I don't have a tv and all musical theatre fans are talking about this lately. At that performance I went to today it was mentioned more than once and I just had to nod along quietly I think if I had a tv, I'd probably watch it out of curiosity. I don't normally like reality shows of any kind, but back when they were doing Maria I would've watched it, if I wasn't always working and sharing a tv with 3 other people. I agree with Jenno about it being unfair to the people who have gone the 'normal route' and worked ten times as hard though.

The shows themselves aren't that fantastic. "Any Dream Will Do" is exactly the same format as Maria so is a bit predictable. I haven't watched the Grease one...but I really don't like Grease that much at all so I don't think I'll bother.
I know reality tv gets the shows publicity etc etc and loads of people will book to go and see the eventual winner but I just feel SO bad for all the people who have gone to stage school and are really talented and who are currently sitting at home with a red pen circling adverts in "The Stage".

From what I know the current favourite to win 'Any Dream Will Do' played Pharoah in the national tour, which was directed by one of the judges so it is in absolutely no way a fair contest as far as I'm concerned.
Maria was an absolute joke as well, Connie was obviously the desired winner right from the word go.
It is fantastic that more people are theatregoing as a result of these shows, but they're very crooked and it's sad that established West End actors feel like they have to go through it.

VOTE LEE TO WIN JOSEPH!
Everyone email ITV and complain that "Grease Is The Word" is a load of horrific, car crash tv bullshit!

I like Grease!! I don't actually like the 'audition for shows on TV' thing, and I don't like 'Grease' but I just liked watching some people think that they actually had the voice for Theatre.
and if Lee doesn't win Joseph, I'm doing what I did when Avenue Q didn't win the Olivier award and go on a mass murder of everyone who didn't vote for him....
....you think I'm kidding....
