My lovely and wonderful boyfriend was very synical about taking me to see Q for my birthday - it was one of those "because I love you and its what you want" kinda things. 6 months later he is OBSESSED! - bless him! - We have been 6 times, twice in the same week and every time I go to London to see him or to do something else Avenue Q tickets magically appear. He isnt your regular musical kinda guy, I took him to see the Beauty and the Beast tour and he suffered all the way through it -- I have to be honest the production was a HUGE disapointment to be honest and I felt bad for dragging him there. I think I need to find a new musical, a new obsession maybe but just something else we can go and enoy as well as Q -- well now Julie has left it has lost its magic for me -- although REALLY want to see Mary as Kate/Lucy So anyway, back to the point of the thread, what reccomendations do people have for musicals for men. Holy Grail is out as I cant stand Monty Python - I thought the Lord of The Rings might appeal to him but he doesnt seem slightly interested. I was thinking about Wicked but Im not sure if that is more because I want to see it than he would really enjoy it LOL Any suggestions welcome!

That's too bad that you don't want to see Spamalot. It really is a good show, and for about another month you would have a chance to see Hannah Waddingham who has probably the best vocal range ANYONE has on the West End.
I've heard very mixed reviews about LOTR, but the majority were bad. You should consider it is quite long (3 acts!!! 2 intervals!!!) and so if your boufriend finds it hard to stay focused it's definitely out! Also I've been told there are only TWO musical numbers, but I never bothered to check if it was true.
Wicked I would not recommend - I love it myself but I think it's a very "girly" show as it's got two strong female leads/role models and all male characters in it are pretty forgettable... he probably wouldn't relate to it.
Have you thought about We Will Rock You? It's a great show and it's got a huge following of men, women and entire families alike. And despite what you might think you never get bored of it!

I asked my husband what was good for a man who doesn't really like musicals and he said 'but I do like musicals' - which is good seeing as he didn't before I met him!
Anyway, his recommendations were Spamalot and Lord of the Rings. I thought I would hate Spamalot as I find that humour not funny, but actually thought it was pretty good once I had got used to the fact it was a bit OTT.
Lord of the Rings I personally thought was a bit dull but we've got 'non-musical type' friends who have seen it recently and really loved it.
My hubby's number one musical is Les Mis but he didn't enjoy it the first time he saw it - after listening to the CD we went back and he fell in love and he's now seen it four times.
Billy Elliot might be another good one - in my opinion it is much better than the film. Hairspray might be fun and quite light hearted - we are not seeing it till January so don't know first hand though.
Hope that helps - seem to have gone on a bit!!

Back on topic. My big brother is normaly anti musicals but I took him to see Phantom and Mary Poppins and he loved both. Phantom I can understand cose it's not an overly camp musical but Mary Poppins is the cheesiest cheese! I love cheesy musicals tho!

I'd go with Spamalot or Billy Elliot for guys really...
Oh let blood brothers close! (sorry, maybe it's because im from liverpool and everyone seems to live and breate blood brothers and thousands and thousands of tours of it) but to me it's a waste of a west end theatre when something like "Little Mermaid" come over from Broadway instead *sigh* .... i really wanna see that lol

WHAT? Little mermaid is the RAPE of my childhood by heelie wearing awful costuming porn star looking freaks. Hell, King Triton is better looking than Prince Eric! That's just plain wierd. The costumes look damn awful, I just want to tear the Ursula costume apart and start it again, because it looks so much like Audrey II meets a drag queen! And don't even get me STARTED on Flounders costume. Ugliest effing broadway costume I've seen. I could have made it, and I can't even use a sewing machine without it exploding. However, Sierria Boggess is quite sweet, and Heidi Blikenstaff is really awesome. As is Sherie Rene Scott. But, the show itself? My least favourite Disney musical. Yes, including Tarzan.
But, back on topic... My Dad adores Oliver!

I have no objection to Tarzan if there's a man in a loincloth! That's one of my reasons that I'm looking forward to Joseph in August so much. Lee Mead in just a tiny but of fabric, that's my kind of show!
