I'm sure I'm not the only person who has complained about the costs of theatre ticket prices, especially in the West End. Over the past couple of years a stop price ticket has gone from around £35 to as much as £60 - and thats without the programme, ice cream, dinner, hotel etc. Which is absurd! I'm lucky that I am able to get student standbys/day seats for my favourite shows, and am glad we have the Tkts booth in London too. But surely as ticket prices increase these will get more expensive too? I found this article on "Guardian Unlimited": blogs.guardian.co.uk/theatre/2006/12/thats_the_price_of_loving_the.htmlAnd was wondering what every one else thinks about this?

It's getting extortionate, but as long as people keep paying the prices, the producers will get away with it and keep charging them. (and yes I'm as much of a mug as everyone else ) However, there aren't too many shows that you can't find offers/discounts for if you look hard enough. The only ones I can think of that are never reduced are Mamma Mia, Billy Elliot, Wicked, Spamalot. Avenue Q's fairly new and they're already running a second "buy one get one free" offer!

I just find it hillarious that people are shocked by the fact that shows are half empty and close early. It's not because they're bad half the time, it's because people can't afford it.
Producers are alienating so many people....

(and yes I'm as much of a mug as everyone else ) Having said that, I do try and avoid buying food/drinks in theatres now... I'm not paying upto £3 for water I can get for 75p nearby, or having a beer at £4ish when it's £2 a pint in the pub opposite!

I don't buy food or drink in theatres, and I've cut down my programme buying now too because they're extortionate for what they are in most cases.

Wicked *does* have discount tickets, they're the day ones that you have to queue up for early in the morning. Also, I'm not a student but I know that if you are you can get top price tickets for Wicked for £25! I usually don't buy food/drinks in theatres unless it's an emergency... and I wait to see if I like the show before I buy a programme I've never been to the official Tkts booth. Do they have same day tickets as well? And up to how much discount can you get? I got family visiting end of Jan and I'd appreciate some pointers.

Tkts sells tickets for a great deal of shows for performances on that day only. You can't book in advance from Tkts. The discounts vary a lot, but are usually decent. Have a look at this, it'll give you a better idea: www.officiallondontheatre.co.uk/tkts

That sounds fab! I'm going to try and get tickets for Billy Elliot on Tuesday by turning up at the Box Office at 10am. Do you know if there are big ques for these tickets? I have an interview at 10:45 and I can't afford to be late! X

If you want day tickets, they aren't released until 12 noon.
You can probably get a good return at full price or a £25 seat in Row B though. The Row B seats are a slightly better view and bookable in advance so it might be worth giving them a ring tomorrow and maybe not having to go to Victoria at all.

Theatre pricing - depending on the theatre is a joke. i saw Avenue Q and sat on the front row for £21.50, and for about the same price you get shoved at the back at Wicked. Tickets for Joseph are too much as well, anything under £50 or so is a bad seat, the same with most ALW shows.

There is a site called www.theatremonkey.com if you click on Lastest Special Offers on the left hand side menu then there are loads of discount tickets for various shows.

Having said that, I do try and avoid buying food/drinks in theatres now... I do that too. I got two huge, and I mean huge, bars of choccie before Q last time for next to nothing but they'd be stupidly priced in any theatre, even my local theatre which is pretty tiny. Back to topic. There was a similar article in the Stage praising Q for being so dently priced for an amazing show. I'm quite oftern put off shows by the price. I'm not going to see Hairspray or Joseph untill I get some Christmas money to help pay for it.

Man I've just looked at prices for wicked in the stalls and its ridiculous! I know. I works out at £64 after the booking fee is added. Sooo expensive, but it is worth it as it is an amazing show and everyone should go and see it at least once. There is an Orange promotion (not sure if still on) where tickets on certain performances are £25. I've read it on the Whats On Stage.com Forum.
